Painting by paper cutting artist Osamu Kubo
72 Seasons
One of his major themes has been drawing the four seasons of Japan while traveling. He has drawn what he encounters with all his heart, enjoying the seasonal ingredients that appeal to him and the scenery of each season, and making wishes for festivals and events. He has become aware of not only the four seasons but also the 24 solar terms based on the lunar calendar, and published "The 24 solar terms drawn in paper cuttings: Seasonal ingredients" (Ehon no Mori). Even today, the beginning of spring, the vernal equinox, the autumnal equinox, the summer solstice, and the winter solstice are often used to mark seasonal turning points.
The 5 solar terms are further divided into periods of approximately five days each, and the XNUMX seasons are a depiction of the changes in weather and plants and animals that I sense through my five senses.
In particular, while I was drawing, I felt that the ingredients on display in stores and our eating habits had lost their sense of season. I looked at ingredients, which are the very gifts of the earth, with gratitude once again for their strength and beauty. When I thought about it again, I was surprised at how many things I didn't know about ingredients, and I felt the importance of eating foods in season.
It took five years to conceive and create this piece, which depicts the 72 seasons through paper cutting.
I would be happy if everyone, from children to adults, could watch it together.
I believe this work will be something that can be passed on to people in the future.
We hope you enjoy watching the show while feeling the change of seasons.
